چکیده

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy was performed at 4.2 K on epitaxial thin-film heterostructures comprising YBa2Cu3O72d and La0.7Ca0.3MnO3, to study the microscopic effects of spin-polarized quasiparticle injection from the half-metallic ferromagnetic manganite on the high Tc cuprate superconductor. The quasiparticle tunneling characteristics observed were consistent with d-wave pairing symmetry, with a gap-maximum D0'22 meV, up to at least 35 mA (7310 3 A/cm) injection. Spectral smearing observed at higher injections could be fitted to elevated effective quasiparticle temperatures, even though negligible sample heating was detected by in situ thermometry. The overall spectral evolution with the injection current also appears to be nonthermal in character, showing a nonmonotonic change in both the zero-bias tunneling conductance and the area under the conductance spectrum. We discuss general implications of these results for the scenario of dynamic pair breaking by a nonequilibrium distribution of spin-polarized quasiparticles. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~99!54208-4#

Spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in cuprate superconductors

The effects of spin-polarized quasiparticle transport in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) epitaxial films are investigated by means of current injection into perovskite ferromagnet-insulatorsuperconductor (F-I-S) heterostructures. These effects are compared with the injection of simple quasiparticles into control samples of perovskite non-magnetic metal-insulator-superconductor (N-IS). System...

Unconventional proximity effect and inverse spin-switch behavior in a model manganite-cuprate-manganite trilayer system.

The proximity effect in a model manganite-cuprate system is investigated theoretically. We consider a situation in which spin-polarized electrons in manganite layers antiferromagnetically couple with electrons in cuprate layers as observed experimentally. The effect of the interfacial magnetic coupling is found to be much stronger than the injection of spin-polarized electrons into the cuprate ...

Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa2Cu3O7−x grown on top of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3

Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of f...

Spin current in ferromagnet / insulator / superconductor junctions

A theory of spin polarized tunneling spectroscopy based on a scattering theory is given for tunneling junctions between ferromagnets and d-wave superconductors. The spin filtering effect of an exchange field in the insulator is also treated. We clarify that the properties of the Andreev reflection are largely modified due to a presence of an exchange field in the ferromagnets, and consequently ...
